The weather has been getting to be unbearable. I’m learning that I have just no tolerance anymore for the heat. I’m overheating and dehydrating very easily and getting sick to my stomach and shaky doing next to nothing outdoors.
All week it has been at least 90, with the last couple days hitting 100 or more. Including a heat index of 115 !! And this is Illinios! Can’t imagine what people are going through in the desert, or far south. My heart goes out to you all.
Hopefully you, wherever you are, are staying cool and your power is on and your A/C is working.
Since the horse show Saturday, I managed only to work Chewbacca early Tuesday morning before it turned 90 out by 9 am. Luke has earned a little reprieve, and Jesse and Dixie will have to wait on their tandem work, which I was eagerly looking to renew.
In an effort to help keep them all cool, I braided their manes. I know I feel cooler when my hair isn’t down to my butt. I usually keep it up in a bun off my neck. Hopefully that transfers over to the horses.
Then, I decided I haven’t done any trick work with the horses is a while because I’ve been concentrating on ‘real work’. So I decided I would re-visit some tricks with everyone today. And, while I was at it… I might as well just video it, too, and make a short video.
So here you go…
Dixie I haven’t asked for tricks from in a while. Poor Dixie. She always falls to the bottom of the herd, doesn’t she. I admit, other than working in the tandem, Dixie really doesn’t have much of a job, and my attention is more on Chewbacca, Luke, and even Jesse. It’s just not a fair life. But, she remembers her tricks well and was happy to earn some carrots.
Chewbacca is next. He’s still working on his trick education, of course. Maybe this winter I will actually finally construct a real pedestal. Maybe even a bridge for driving. And eventually, I want to add in a tarp, but I need to get a bigger one. Anyway… Chewbacca’s Spanish Walk is really getting pretty good. I’m happy. His bow is coming along. He’s obviously not going down all the way on one knee, yet, but I’ve learned with horses, they are a little more uncomfortable about going all the way down, so it just takes more time.
Luke is next, and of course, he knows his stuff. Smart as a whip, that one.
And finally, the project of getting Luke & Chewie to Spanish Walk in synch, side by side. I really haven’t done any of this with them in a while – not since the winter. So it shows. It’s a work in progress, you can say. And I need to work on the progress a lot more! lol.
So many things to do….. and it’s too hot to do any of it.
